News from New Delhi
We have been treated to an amazing array of lectures given by professors, performing artists, religious leaders, heads of NGOs, and a CNBC news correspondent. We met members of the Fulbright Commission in India and the Center for Cultural Resources and Training, as well as the cultural attache to the U.S. Embassy in India.
Our visits to museums, world heritage sites and various monuments in New Delhi were inspiring. One of the highlights of the program, however, was a visit to a madrasa for girls. The school provides services for 800 students, 300 of whom are on scholarship, and features a curriculum that includes English, Hindi, math, science, social studies and Islamic studies. Upon successful completion of the madrasa’s program, students are eligible for enrollment in Jambia University. The aim of the school is to teach tolerance, brotherhood, secularism, love, and peace. India is a study in contrasts. We have been reminded often that “for every truth about India, the opposite is also true”. Ideas are swirling...I look forward to sorting them into some type of coherent order by the end of the trip.
