A drone is generated electronically and the rag (scale) is tuned to the drone. The tabla (drums) accompany the single line melody. Indian music is not harmonized. The taal provides the rhythmic content for the piece. No shoes on stage, as it is a sacred place.

Namaste
Madison, Wisconsin is home to one of the world's finest Asian Studies program and the location of our Fulbright-Hays orientation program. The 2009 participants include sixteen educators from fourteen states. An introduction to the program included a concert of Indian music in which we were given a brief introduction to the differences between Northern and Southern Indian music traditions, and a brief introduction to Hindi.
